The Lake Pontchartrain Sail & Power Squadron provides boater education for it's members as well as a basic boating course for the general public.  Completion of one of the basic classes qualifies one for the Louisiana Boater Operator license.  The schedule for 2010 is pending.  Please consult the "Calendar" page for information as it is now

COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT - USPS “SEAMANSHIP” (“S”) COURSE

Course Title: “Seamanship”              Prerequisites: None              Class Location: Maritime Museum              Course Fee: $35.00

Course Materials Included in Student’s Kit: Seamanship Student Manual (2009 Edition); The One Minute Guide to Rules of the Road (2nd Edition, 157 pages); Knot Practice Board. These USPS materials are furnished at a cost of $35.00 per kit. Kits may be shared.

Period of Instruction: On nine consecutive Saturday mornings from 0900 – 1100, commencing February 20 and concluding on April 17, 2010 . Certain class sessions may be extended to allow for optional on-the-water instruction. Exam date: April 17, 2009

Course Description: “S” is a recently revised course; it focuses on safety, boat handling, rules of the road and marlinspike. The student material is published in eight (8) well-organized chapters that make it easy for students to stay abreast of the instruction.  This USPS course also has been developed to include a series of Power Point Slides for each chapter. Per agreement with LPSPS leadership, we intend to make this course not just a classroom experience, but an enjoyable, hands-on practical learning opportunity as well. The practical portion of the course will be accomplished toward the end of the course in optional sessions that will be conducted aboard various vessels provided by LPSPS members for this purpose.
